For surface restoration and smoothing nibs, fine abrasives are essential. Add controllability, and you have Micro-Mesh Buff Sticks. In the Nashua Pen Spa, we go through these Micro-Mesh buff sticks “like there’s no tomorrow.” Every new or customized nib that leaves the Spa has had a Close Encounter with a buff stick before it goes. (They’re reusable for most tasks, and for surface restoration we reuse them until they can’t take it any more, but for nib regrinding and finishing we prefer to use ’em once.)
(The Sheaffer Triumph Imperial pen shown in the photo is not included!)
Our buff sticks have three grit sizes: the pink part is 2400 grit, the white part is 4000 grit, and the gray side is 12,000 grit. Micro-Mesh makes its foam-backed abrasives in many sizes, shapes, and grit ranges. We’ve tried ’em all, and we’ve settled on these sticks as offering the best shape and size as well as the ideal choice of grits for the work we do. The pink and white areas are perfect for taking down rough stuff on pen barrels and caps, and the gray works wonderfully together with our nib smoothing films in our nib smoothing régime. (Don’t get impatient and go after a nib with the pink or white unless you really want to send it to us afterward.)
We are not able to offer a consulting service or a course in surface restoration or nib smoothing. You can find basic instructions for nib smoothing in Frank Dubiel’s book FOUNTAIN PENS THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO REPAIR AND RESTORATION. and there is also a very useful article on the Web, Nib Grinding Experiences, by Wim Geeraets.
