Repair Essentials: “Get-a-Grip” Gripper Squares

For taking the section out of a pen, you need a pair of section pliers and something to give you a good firm grip on the barrel.

Gripper square

Back in the day, Sheaffer and Parker included sheets of rubber for this purpose in their repairmen’s kits. Plain old rubber worked, but it wasn’t the ideal material. (Thick enough, it wasn’t flexible enough; flexible enough, it was too thin.) It was just the best they had. But now there‘s better.

RichardsPens.com “Get-a-Grip” gripper squares are ideally tacky and nicely padded to give you a solid grip with the control you need. Custom made of a material similar to rug padding, they’re thicker and tackier than standard rug pads, and their more open texture spreads the pressure on your hand while concentrating the “sticky” against the barrel. Their extra thickness means you don’t have to squeeze your hand so tightly closed as with thinner materials.

Our gripper squares are just the right size, 6" (15 cm) square. And because nothing is forever, they come three to a package. You can use one on your bench and one in your traveling repair kit, and you’ll have a spare that you can activate when you wear out one of the two that are in service.

CAUTION
CAUTION
Working on pens carries with it the risk of further damage. Using a gripper square, or any other tool to enhance your grip, gives you more power. It’s easier to disassemble pens, but it’s also correspondingly easier to break them. Be careful!
