Repair Essentials: Exact Replacement Touchdown O-Rings

The problem: Restoring the filler in a Touchdown or Snorkel pen is easy, if you have the right parts. Since the Touchdown mechanism relies on compressed air, it’s important to have good tight seals, especially th O-ring where the Touchdown tube slides within the barrel. Commercial O-rings with a 1-mm cross section (7×1 and 8×1) are readily available and appear to work — but they don’t seal as tightly as Sheaffer’s original O-rings, and pens in which they are installed don't work as well as they should.

The solution: We offer custom-made O-rings that are an exact replacement for the Sheaffer originals. Made of the same synthetic rubber, they have the same firmness (durometer) and the same diameter and thickness (a tiny bit fatter than standard O-rings). See the unretouched photo below. On the left is the standard black 7×1 O-ring that’s commonly used for Touchdown TM and Snorkel pens; on the right is one of our dark gray exact-replacement O-rings.
