======================================================================== Nib Noise Volume 4 Number 3 ======================================================================== Welcome to Nib Noise. This newsletter is a joint effort of Richard Binder and Don Fluckinger. We hope you'll enjoy reading this month's issue. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS NEWSLETTER! For comments or questions, send email to: richard@richardspens.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Travelin' On to Raleigh *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two weeks after the New England Pen Show, and here we are going to Raleigh. Yes, things have been a bit frantic around here -- I'm looking forward to getting in the car to head south! North Carolina is a pretty nice place any time, but with a pen show in the offing, it's even more attractive. The show begins Thursday and runs through Sunday. Public days are Saturday and Sunday. This show is run by Terry and Sonia Mawhorter, who also run the terrific Ohio show every November, and you can count on its being a "really big shew"! (Remember Ed Sullivan?) If you plan to come and haven't ever been to a show before, you might want to read my article on Your First Pen Show: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=ref_info/firstshow.htm For more information, visit the show's Web site: http://www.raleighpenshow.com/ I'll be there to regrind and tweak nibs. Bring a pen or two, and share some chatter at my table while I jazz up your writing experience. If you have pens that need repairs other than nib work, I'll be happy to save you some shipping costs by collecting them at the show and bringing them home to my studio. I'll have a selection of new pens from Bexley, Conway Stewart, Filcao, Pelikan, Signum, and Taccia. I'll have a stock of my preground Pelikan M200 specialty nibs, with demonstrators of them all for you to try before you buy. These nibs fit M200, M250, M400, and M600 pens, including the M620 City series and the new Piazza Navona. If you don't have a Pelikan pen to go with your new nib, I'll be happy to fit your nib with a new M200 pen body in your choice of colors. I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I hope to see you there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** The Taccia Doric -- an Instant Classic *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ They were worth the wait. The Dorics are an immediate hit in my book -- sleek, with gorgeous resins that give the smooth surface a fluted look. The metal section is textured for a firm grip, and the pen's silhouette has the same perfect taper you'll find on the columns of the Parthenon. I've been so busy I haven't had time to photograph the Dorics for my site, but I do have them in stock. You can see them at Taccia's site: http://www.taccia.com/doric%20collection.html You can also see them, try them, and choose one for yourself, at my table at the Raleigh show. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Speaking of Taccia, Can You Say "Gold Mine"? *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A little measuring and an experiment or two showed me that I can offer you a distinction with a difference: Any Taccia pen I sell, except the smaller Portuguese model, is available with an 18K gold nib in fine, medium, or broad. Eleganc and economy, wrapped up in one sweet-writing package. For more information, please send me an email query. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** And Speaking of Gold Mines, Can You Say "Binder Custom Nibs"? *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ All of the preground specialty nib shapes I've been offering in steel for years are now available in 14K gold! Check them out in the colorful chart on my site's Pelikan page: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=newp_pel.htm#custom ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Bexley's New Submariner Is Sailing Large! *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I've been shipping a Submariner here and there, mostly the bright red Richard Binder SE, but some of those soft, summery standard colors are finding new homes as well. (Think about a blue one leaning out the top of the pocket of your blue chambray shirt -- nice, eh?) I wasn't all that surprised when Barbara refused to give back the SE I stubbed for her to show off in Boston; these pens are that good. Don't wait until they're out of stock -- order yours today. http://www.richardspens.com/?page=newp_bex.htm#submariner ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Signum in the News Again! *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I've heard on the grapevine that Signum is going to come out with something really exciting, but the vine is a little short to reach from Brooklyn to Nashua, so I don't know what's up. But I know Steve and Maryann, and I know it's going to be good. In the meantime, check out the Signum Orione and Nova on my site: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=newp_sig.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Persoanlized Custom Nibs with No Waiting *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Unless otherwise requested at the time of sale, I dip-test each new pen that you purchase at no extra charge before shipment, aligning and smoothing the nib and ensuring that it has good flow. If you order a new pen with a customized nib, I will modify the nib and ship the pen immediately instead of putting it into my regular queue. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Broad Strokes" by Richard Binder ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This month I've been fiddling with Parker cheapies, so to speak, and I have a profile for you: http://www.richardspens.com/?prof=21 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Extra Fine Points" by Don Fluckinger ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Our intrepid columnist latches onto the hobby legacy of Frank Dubiel in the most dubious way: By picking up a peck of the late collector's Wearevers at the Boston show. http://www.richardspens.com/?page=extrafine/xf0506.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** For the German Speakers in the Audience... *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Through the generosity of Hugo Giese, some of my site's reference information is gradually being translated into German. Hugo has already tackled my three-part introduction to nibs, and I'm waiting to see what he'll do next. http://www.richardspens.com/?page=ref_txt.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Subscribe to my RSS Feed *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RSS means Really Simple Syndication.
