======================================================================== Nib Noise * Volume 17 Number 5 * august 2018 ======================================================================== Welcome to Nib Noise. I hope you'll enjoy reading this month's issue. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS NEWSLETTER! The robot that sends it out hasn't yet learned to read. Fountain Pen Profiles: L. E. & A. A. Waterman In this generously illustrated book are profiles of nine pivotal L. E. Waterman fountain pen models from 1917 to 1957, together with a long look at A. A. Waterman's history and pens. I've produced these books for Kindle, iBooks, and Nook. Check them out on this page, where there are links to the three online stores: http://www.richardspens.com/?bks=richard ----------------------------------------------------------------------- *** Our Next Pen Show... *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ...will be in September. We will not be attending the Washington DC SuperShow this year, but we are definitely signed up for the Fifth Annual Commonwealth Pen Show at the Holiday Inn Boston Bunker Hill Area Hotel, on Sunday, September 16. It's a one-day show, but it's a good one, and well worth the trip if you are close enough. The weather outside might be a little cooler than it was a couple of weeks ago, but the pen show room will be hot! Come and enjoy the fun of a classic New England-style pen show! If you plan to come and haven't ever been to a show before, you might want to read my article on Your First Pen Show: http://www.richardspens.com/?shows=firstshow Also, please read our "Table Talk" FAQ to learn how we operate at shows: http://www.richardspens.com/?info=shows+faq For information about the show and the hotel, please visit the show's Web site. http://www.commonwealthpenshow.com/ I will be working on nibs to improve or customize your writing experience, and Barbara will be juggling people to make sure I don't have time to go on a buying spree. We can accept your MasterCard, VISA, American Express, or Discover card -- but many of the vintage dealers are hobbyists who can handle only cash, so be sure to note the location of the ATM in the hotel lobby. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. We'll be there all day, and we hope to see you there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** The Glossopedia *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A major feature of my website is the Glossopedia, a hybrid between a glossary and a single-volume encyclopedia. With more than 1500 defini- tions and descriptions, more than 900 illustrations, and more than 2100 cross-references, it's the most comprehensive of its kind on the Web. Each month, Nib Noise includes a randomly chosen Glossopedia entry. -------- Yaroslavl. (also Jaroslavl) A pen manufacturer located in Yaroslavl, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Yaroslavl pens featured steel nibs and, frequently, metal caps, and there were models with accordion and piston fillers; the latter had removable barrels and a permanently attached filler that resembles an ordinary piston converter. At the lower end of the line there were pen with syringe (pull) fillers, also concealed within a removable barrel. High-line models featured a spring-loaded clip that was stamped, cookie cutter fashion, from a thick steel sheet rather than being stamped from a thin sheet and then formed. -------- To immerse yourself in the Glossopedia, follow this link: http://www.richardspens.com/?gloss= -------- To create links to specific single entries in the Glossopedia, follow the instructions in the "How to Bookmark or Link to Pages" page. For example, here's the link to the entry above: http://www.richardspens.com/?gloss=latremore ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Broad Strokes *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In 1948, Eversharp announced the Raymond Loewy-designed Symphony to replace the aging Skyline. But instead many trim levels and price points for the same model as with the Skyline, this time, there was a new range of distinctly different pens, both ballpoint and fountain. The fountain pens started with the $3.50 Reporter, moved up to the $5.00 Symphony, and reached the top of the line with the Envoy. Never heard of the Envoy? Here's your chance! http://www.richardspens.com/?prof=envoy To help you find reference articles on our site that have been edited recently, there is a handy heading right at the top of the reference index, listing the five most recently added or edited reference pages. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Sharing the Wealth *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I think sharing information is a good thing, and I note that many people post links to my articles on websites such as the Fountain Pen Network and various pen groups on Facebook. To encourage such sharing by making it easier and more uniform, my site has a page titled, "How to Bookmark or Link to Pages on This Site," showing what I call the "best practices" way to do it. It's quick and easy, and it creates short, snappy links that are easy to remember, like this one: http://www.richardspens.com/?page=linking ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Bringing RichardsPens.com into the 21st Century *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I am gradually converting my entire site to HTML5, the latest standard for web sites. I have converted the entire site of more than 500 pages, and I am in the process of redesigning everything to work without the obsolete frameset. Please be patient, as I can't work on this every day, but do know that it's coming. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *** Follow Us on the Internet with Facebook *** ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RichardsPens.com would like to be liked on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/NashuaPenSpa ======================================================================== If you received this newsletter from Richard Binder, you are a Nib Noise subscriber.
