NoteThe Manhattan Pen Makers Project was a database created by Ron Dutcher and maintained for several years on his own Web site, which is now defunct. Rather than allow this valuable information to be lost, I have retrieved it from the Internet Archive and recreated the Project here. As I reformatted the files for use on this site, I made the following emendations:
Typographical corrections.
Standardization of forms (e.g., adding periods after abbreviations).
Updates and corrections from more recently available sources, including the addition of more than 125 company names and more than 350 addresses that I have discovered while checking entries (still an ongoing process). Please note that a given individual, e. g., Warren N. Lancaster, might appear under multiple company names as he moved or reconstituted his business.
Ordering of entries on this page alphabetically by last name and chronologically among multiple entries for a given name.
Creation of more than 450 pop-up citations for all address/date combinations that I have been able to verify.
For makers about whom there is information in the database and also in this site’s Glossopedia, addition of links from database maker pages to entries in the Glossopedia.
For makers about whom there is information in this site’s Glossopedia but not in the database, addition of links from names on this page to entries in the Glossopedia.
The following is Ron Dutcher’s original introduction to the Project:
About the Manhattan Pen Makers Project
For a long while this project was merely an Excel spreadsheet that I used to help me keep my pen collection sorted. But it kept growing. It is true that other areas of the United States, like Boston and Cincinnati, for example, were hot spots for gold pen and fountain pen development, but Manhattan has a unique place in fountain pen history.

Levi Brown Office |
After all, Manhattan was the birthplace of the American pen industry.
Isaac Hawkins, friend of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, traveled to England and studied the pencil industry in the old world. He befriended Samson Mordan and together developed the first mechanical pencil. Hawkins learned of an English jeweler who had experimented with iridium and pens, but had given up since he found iridium too hard to work and shape. Hawkins tried his hand and created some techniques to work the material, and created the first gold pens tipped with iridium. Hawkins sold the patent rights to a Reverend Cleveland, who returned to America and enlisted Levi Brown, a watchmaker from Detroit, to help him with his pen business. They set up shop in Manhattan and began making pens. Many of the young apprentices of this firm started out on their own, and the pen business grew. Many of the modern pen companies today, like Waterman, can trace their eveloution back to the first Manhattan pens. In most cases, the pen companies have long since disappeared, and little is left of them. Often today pen collectors will find a pen with a New York imprint, but the collector will not be able to find any historical refrence to the pen. Hopefully, this database will help.
I do not pretend to claim that this New York fountain pen makers database is complete. Surely it is not, but please understand that this is still a work in progress. It started out as a reference for myself, but others have urged me to put it online, so here it is.
Special thanks to
A Note About the Dates in the List
The dates listed here refer to the earliest reference that I have found for that pen maker at that address. The dates do not indicate the time of establishement unless I specified so in the biography.
Some company names in the table are links. There are three kinds of links:
Bold links go to pages containing additional information and images that Ron provided about those pen makers.
Italicized links go to entries in this site’s Glossopedia.
Linked names enclosed in parentheses and identified as “formerly,” “later,” “successor to,” or “succeeded by,” go to that pen maker’s entry in the table.
Where information in Ron’s pages conflicts with what is in the Glossopedia, I consider the latter to be the more authoritative.
An address that is a link will display a pop-up dialog showing the citation for the original document that provided that address. For addresses that are not links, I have not yet found citations that tie the exact address to the exact year.
