Glossary: Fountain Pen Bits, Pieces, and Other Stuff

Like any other specialized item, the fountain pen has amassed a lexicon of terms that are unique. And like other jargon languages, fountain pen jargon can be cryptic or confusing. This glossary presents brief definitions for many of the most common pen terms. It is not complete (an impossible goal); but it is a work in progress, and I welcome suggestions for terms to add. (Created December 28, 2006)
The glossary is organized alphabetically. For numbers, look under the spelled-out form; e.g., for 14K, look under fourteen.

Yard-O-Led
|
A manufacturing company located in Birmingham, England. Founded in 1934 as the Yard-O-Led Pencil Company to manufacture propelling mechanical pencils based on Sampson Mordan’s 1822 patented design featuring storage of twelve 3" lengths of lead. This one-yard supply of lead was the source of the company’s name. Currently producing high-quality pens and pencils primarily in sterling silver, Yard-O-Led is a division of Filofax, a part of the Letts Filofax Group Ltd. Shown below is a Yard-O-led Viceroy Victorian.
