The awe-inspiring might and the rich beauty of ancient Rome are magnificently reflected in the 120 numbered fountain pens and 80 numbered rollerballs of Signum’s Imperial Rome LE. The obelisk-shaped clip perfectly complements the solid appearance of the fluted column shape and the elegance of the investment cast sterling silver cap-insert renderings of the Colosseum and an aqueduct. Please contact us by email to purchase your own piece of Imperial Rome. (See below for size info.)

Since 1979, Signum products have been made with precious metals and a passion for handicraft by masters. Pens are engraved with the mark *1776 VI to identify Signum as a producer of precious metal objects. The mark of the Signum line is the distinctive cap-crown chariot wheel — a separate part, not merely cast into the metal cap tassie — borne by each Signum pen. But the best part is that in addition to looking and feeling luxurious, these pens are great writers. And, as the contracted warranty service center for Empire Writing Instruments, the U.S. distributor, we have first-hand knowledge of their excellent reliability record.
All the Signum pens we offer feature 18K gold nibs. Although we normally stock just the models shown here, we’re able to obtain any currently available Signum pen for you; if what you want isn’t here, please contact us by email. You can see the complete Signum line at Empire Writing Instruments.
Pens That Write Right! If the nib’s no good, it doesn’t matter how fancy the rest of the pen is — it’s not a good pen.
Unless otherwise requested at the time of sale, I tune each new pen or nib at no extra charge before shipment. I fill the pen with Waterman Blue-Black ink and write with it on paper from the same fountain pen friendly pads we sell, adjusting as necessary to bring it up to the RichardsPens.com “factory” standard for smoothness and flow. The result is an adjusted nib, not a customized one.
Different inks or different papers can produce different results. Any special adjustment to accommodate your flow preference or a specific ink or paper comes under the heading of customization, and there will be an additional charge for that work.
Looking for a Custom Nib?To see how easy it is to order a pen with its nib customized for you, read the instructions in this pop-up. If you order a new pen with a customized nib, I will modify the nib (for an extra charge) and ship the pen immediately instead of putting it into my regular queue.

How about a Solare Grande |
Signum has created the Solare collection in hues of Midnight, Sunset, and Sunrise to represent our solar system — and for the daring souls in the crowd, there’s also a surprising retro Pink! To make it easier for you to coördinate your Solare Grande to your wardrobe and jewelry choices, Signum offers the Solare with either sterling silver or vermeil furniture. Hand turned from solid acrylic rod, the Grande is an exquisite pen, featuring a curvaceous new shape that nestles in the hand like an extension of the soul. Sized at 521/32"capped and 73/32" posted (more size info here), the Grande is slender and weighted moderately to create a superb balance. Convenient filling is with a cartridge or the included converter, and Grande is fitted with the usual excellent 18K Signum nib in fine, medium, or broad. Click the magnifying glass for zoomed images of this pen. Price: $395.00 $295.00
The part we didn’t say above is that each Solare comes with a certificate that entitles you to a second barrel at no extra charge. Mix or match: go wild or take a back seat. Shown here is a Grande in Midnight that’s been fitted with a Sunset barrel. Ah, just the colors to go with that black 57 T-Bird with the rolled and tucked red Naugahyde upholstery. Put the black barrel back on, and you’re ready for the opera.

“Carina” is an old Italian word for the keel of a ship, the foundation from which the structure rises. Today, it means pretty, and both meanings describe the Signum Carina. This is a solid pen, built from the ground up to be reliable and attractive. Attention to detail is extraordinary; with a tassie and a hand-matched jewel at each end of its body, the Carina’s lines flow smoothly and richly. The 12-faceted cap is reminiscent of classic Italian designs, while the round barrel provides superb comfort. Furniture on the Carina is sterling silver, with three of the six elegant colors featuring vermeil (gold over silver). The Roman chariot wheel in the cap crown is the mark of excellence that only Signum pens can bear. At 55/8"capped and 63/32" posted (more size info here), Carina is about the same size as the Orione. It fills conveniently with cartridges or a converter and is fitted with a shining 18K gold nib in your choice of fine, medium, or broad. Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen. Signum’s exquisite Orione Collection features lovely resins, so brilliant and deep that you could almost go swimming in them. Setting off these jewel-like colors is furniture plated in sterling silver. This masterfully crafted pen is every bit as good as it looks; it uses a piston filler, and the rhodium-plated nib is 18K gold in your choice of fine, medium, or broad. Each Orione pen includes a fabric-lined two-pen case made of genuine hand-tooled Italian leather. Click the magnifying glass for a zoomed image of this pen. The Orione is 59/16"capped, 61/16" posted (more size info here). Price: $325.00 $230.00

A small difference in size can make a huge difference in writing ease and comfort; time spent considering which is the right size for your hand will be time well spent. Here is an illustration of Signum pens (posted) on a calibrated grid, followed by a table listing pertinent size information numerically.
How Do They Compare to Our Other Brands?
You can compare the sizes of these pens against those of our other brands’ pens on our Compare Pens Side by Side page.
Notes:
For pens whose barrels have a distinct “step” in diameter near the threads, barrel diameters are given as two slash-separated figures. The two figures represent the smaller and larger unthreaded diameters, respectively, at the step.
