As a compulsive “play with Photoshop” type, I can’t resist making new computer desktop wallpapers, and why not make them available to you? These wallpapers are free! To download a full-sized wallpaper image (in JPEG format), right-click on the appropriate link below the thumbnail image on this page and choose the pop-up contextual menu’s option to save the linked file. (Macintosh users with single-button mice can control-click or click and hold until the contextual menu pops up.) If you are using Windows, you may need to turn on Active Desktop in order to use a JPEG image as wallpaper.
To use these wallpapers as a screen saver: You can use the screen savers that are built into Mac OS X and Windows Vista or XP, or download and install Eclipse (for older versions of Mac OS) or AnyImage (for older versions of Windows). Place the images into a folder on your hard drive and choose that folder for the screen saver to use.
Usage Note
These images are copyrighted works of art and are protected under Pan-American and International Copyright Conventions. I grant you permission to download them only for use as desktop wallpaper on your personal computer. To use them for any other purpose, including but not limited to redistribution, inclusion as part of any composite images, or display on a Web site, is theft.
The Image That Started It All, September 2001

Hotel Desktop, 1919:
|
Everything in this picture is authentic to 1919. The silver dollar is a Morgan dollar minted in 1887, and the pennies are “VDB” Wheat pennies minted in 1909. The pocket watch is a 12-size Waltham made in 1917, and the fountain pen is a Parker Jack-Knife Safety Nº 23½ made in about 1918. The advertising blotter is a 1919 Ætna Insurance 100th Anniversary blotter featuring a Chicago agency. Postcards and stamps are similarly correct, and the letter our imaginary friend is answering was handwritten by a friend of mine. |
