In my desktop wallpaper “Hotel Desktop, 1919: Answering Her Letter,” the letter that our imaginary friend Edward is answering, written by his wife Ramona, is partially readable. For the terminally curious, here is the full text of Ramona’s letter:
The Tides July 24 Dearest Edward,
The gardens are lovely at this time of year, bursting with gorgeous bloom and populated by many industrious bees and butterflies. The perfume of the lilies is as intoxicating as ever, yet the spell lacks somewhat of its potency. I so wish that you could be here with me to share in it.
Helen and Rollie are down for the summer, and we’ve been enjoying croquet and luncheon on the lawn. Rollie has bought a fast new automobile. He takes us for exciting rides along the seacoast road; we’ve stopped twice for luncheon at the cutest little café, where the Portugese [sic] fisherman’s stew is simply marvelous.
When last I wrote, we were still awaiting the arrival of John’s new governess. She came Thursday. Her name is Ellie, and she appears to be everything the agency said she’d be. John has fallen entirely under her spell; he’s been on his best behavior all week. She started him on Cicero today, and he’s been striking a heroic pose and orating, ”Quousque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra?” at every opportunity. He’s really quite entertaining!
Do come home to us, Edward my sweet. The Tides seems so empty without the touch of your hand and the wreathing smoke of your pipe.
Ever, Ramona
